Join our 1st Community Educational Workshop!
Twice exceptional kids have a reputation for being brilliant—yet also resistant to learning outside of their own interest areas, prone to emotional dysregulation and vulnerable to social difficulties and delays.
In this Educational Workshop, internationally-recognized neuropsychologist Steven Mattis, PhD, A.B.P.P. and Cajal Academy Head of School Cheryl Viirand, J.D. will discuss the unique neuropsychological profiles of twice exceptional kids, how it drives their educational and social-emotional needs, and how you can get beyond the stereotypes and tropes to prepare them to thrive in college and beyond.
In this hybrid workshop, you will learn
how twice exceptional learners present differently from other students, and how to identify them in the classroom
why twice exceptional learners tend to resist learning unrelated to their own interests—and how you can help them move past this in preparation for the “real world”
how you can leverage twice exceptional kids’ high analytical abilities to empower them to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for complex regulatory difficulties including sensory integration disorder and complex chronic medical conditions
why twice exceptional learners are particularly prone to task avoidance, defiance and even school refusal
how to identify and support the social-emotional needs of twice exceptional kids, and why common social-emotional and behavior management techniques may not be appropriate for this group of kids
why it is difficult to meet the needs of twice exceptional kids in traditional mainstream and special education settings

About the series
This is the first in what will be a series of workshops presented by Cajal Academy staff for parents, educators and other providers who support bright, gifted and twice exceptional kids. Borne of our work to develop neuroscience-based educational approaches, this series represents the beginning of our work to publish and disseminate the findings we have made through our work with students enrolled at Cajal Academy, and the transformative changes our students have made within the program.
We encourage you to visit our admissions page if you are interested in exploring enrollment opportunities for your child; school district personnel and other professionals are encouraged to visit our Outplacement Resource Center to learn how we can support school districts and their students.
