Cajal Academy puts the science behind body-brain connections at the heart of our program, through a whole new model for school—redefining what education can do

Three fundamental shifts in our understanding of how children learn, socialize and grow are at the heart of Cajal Academy’s groundbreaking program. Both are by now well-established in the scientific literature. Until now, neither has been operationalized in our schools.

  1. The human brain is constantly rewiring itself to improve its ability to do the things we ask it to do (a principle called Neuroplasticity).

  2. Each skill we learn builds on a neural foundation developed through the skills that you’ve learned before.

  3. Connections between the body and the brain play a big a role in our learning and social-emotional experiences (both positively and negatively), just as our emotions do.

Putting these three core principles together, we’re unlocking children’s gifts through research-backed approaches that are proving successful at transforming learning disabilities like dyslexia, dyspraxia, language processing disorders and dyspraxia.

We re-examined all aspects of education and dug into the science of how children learn, socialize and grow—and then built a new model for empowering even very complex kids within a mainstream K-12 school

Cajal Academy’s program builds on the basics that are included within mainstream educational models and adds the missing link: the neuropsychology that explains how hidden connections between the body and brain influence our learning, social and emotional experiences — and how we can use that science to remediate learning disabilities and empower social-emotional growth.

We infuse these universal human truths throughout all aspects of the program, through sensory therapy to start each morning, movement in the classroom, neuroscience curriculum helping students understand how they can use these connections to their benefit and coaching in how to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate. We re-examined all aspects of education in view of these insights and developed a new model for education that aligns to what scientists know today about how kids learn, socialize and grow. Starting with the data in each child’s neuropsychological and neurophysio profile, we create individualized programs that combine traditional and Cajal-exclusive therapies to reduce any obstacles that stand in their way. We combine this with Growth Mindset and Agency Coaching, which accelerates student growth by helping them make connections between their complex profiles and how they influence their decisions in real time, integrating insights from across a child’s combined learning, social, emotional, neurophysio and medical conditions, and to find the courage to try things that have previously been difficult.

Each student has a highly-personalized program, within a community-driven school model

At the core of our model is the principal that our students are one cohort and one community, with each student receiving the highly-individualized program that can best help them to grow as a student and has a human.

We rebuild foundational skills, rewiring the brain to remove learning disabilities

Our research-backed methodology is proving successful at eliminating learning disabilities like dyslexia, dyspraxia and certain language processing disorders and some forms of ADHD. Our first-of-its-kind approach starts with a paradigm shift in how we define, and treat, children’s learning differences, and is grounded in our team’s expertise in child development.

We use the data in each child’s profile and the neuroscience of how kids’ “wiring” affects their experiences to create highly-personalized social-emotional programs

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

We propel social transformations through science, connection and community

We “leapfrog” social skills learning by giving kids a more predictable toolbox for how to understand their peers’ actions, and to foster truly inclusive neurodiverse communities.

Community-wide project-based learning brings these individual programs together across ages and profiles

Students learn CT state curriculum standards in ability-based groupings, and then collaborate together to solve real world problems through our community-wide, inter-disciplinary approach to problem-based learning.

We empower kids to optimize their own outcomes through coaching in how to connect—and leverage—the dots.

Our unique, Growth Mindset & Agency Coaching propels students to new levels by helping them connect the dots across even the most complex profile; understand how their data informs their decision making; and develop the skills to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for their needs.

Fostering innovative thinkers

What started as one mom’s determination to ensure that bright and gifted kids in Connecticut and Westchester County have access to a school with the opportunities and supports they need turned into a whole new model for schools that modernizes education to match current neuroscientific research. Here’s what this looks like day-to-day for the kids enrolled at Cajal:

We apply modern neuroscience to reduce the challenges that hold a child back—not just accommodate them.

Our students start each morning by reconnecting with each other and readying themselves for learning, through a group sensory session.

Students and their teacher closely observe a running stream

We prepare tomorrow’s thought leaders to solve complex, real world problems and deep dive project-based learning.

We integrate diagnostic and clinical expertise in OT, PT, SLP, psychology & neuropsychology into all we do, so kids are free to be kids after school.

We empower kids to start living their best lives today, through strategies and support to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for their unique needs.

Instead of fighting kids’ need to move, we leverage movement as a powerful learning tool.

We offer a first-of-its-kind program empowering kids with complex, chronic medical conditions to understand, manage & advocate for their medical needs within educational and professional environments.

We help kids move past their fear of failure and step outside their comfort zones to take on challenges that are outside their own areas of interest.

We empower parents with the information you need to understand and support your child’s growth.

We give kids the social-emotional skills and understandings they need to foster inclusive, neurodiverse communities.

Modern neuroscience reveals that kids’ life-lived experiences, from ADHD to anxiety to learning disabilities, are influenced by connections between the body and the brain. We’re using that science to give kids agency over their own outcomes.
